This Independence Day, Become Truly Independent By Choosing Your Health Cover

What does independence mean to you? It is different things to different people. To some, it is eating what they want; to others, it is choosing their partner; and to some, it is making their investment choices. Undoubtedly, every kind of freedom is important.

Are you Truly Independent?

We might feel offended when people dictate our lifestyle choices — nobody likes to be told what to wear, what not to eat, and whom not to love. But when it comes to buying a health insurance plan, we are happy, or even relieved, to let others make the decision for us. There could be several reasons you let your insurance agent or your parents or your friends, or even a bot, choose a health insurance plan for you. The reasons can range from lack of time to boredom to confusion to sheer lack of will. However, do you consider yourself truly independent if you let others make one of the most important decisions of your life?

Choosing a Health Insurance Plan: It’s Personal

When Ajit Mukherjee got married three years ago, one of the first important decisions he took was to buy a health insurance plan for himself and his wife. However, he had no actual role in choosing the health insurance cover. He simply opted for a health insurance plan that his friend had purchased. Three years hence, when he and his wife were expecting a child, he found out that his wife’s maternity expenses would not be covered by their health insurance cover. This happened because Ajit bought a health insurance plan that did not cover maternity treatment. Even though his friend’s requirement differed from his, their health insurance plans were the same.

Choosing a health insurance plan should be a personal choice decision based on several aspects. Here are some factors you need to consider before buying a health insurance plan:

Who will be covered in your health insurance policy?

The needs of your senior citizen parents will be different from those of your teenage children. The ages of all family members and their medical health history need to be considered before opting for a health insurance cover.

What is the waiting period?

When you buy a health insurance policy, you have to wait for a certain period until you start receiving coverage for your pre-existing illnesses. This can go up to five years depending on your health insurance policy, therefore it is important to check the waiting period in your health insurance plan. For instance, if you are planning to expand your family, check for the waiting period for maternity treatment in your health insurance policy.

How smooth is the claim process?

For most policyholders, their biggest concern is surrounding the health insurance claim process. A health insurance policy is redundant if your health insurance claims are not settled in time or the process to register your claims is complex. Check whether the process to make health insurance claims is digital and the customer support is effective.

Other important factors that you need to consider before choosing a health insurance policy are the coverage amount, network of hospitals, cashless benefits and so on.

This Independence Day, make a promise to become truly free by making your own health choices because good life begins with good health.
